REd Loves Green_ziua pamantului-01Vodafone’s mission is to contribute to a digital society that allows socioeconomic development and access for all to the opportunities created by digital solutions, while caring for the Planet through initiatives that reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Vodafone Romania’s commitment to protect the environment is highlighted by the constant concern to implement initiatives with significant impact, which aim at both protecting the existing natural heritage and eliminating non-essential plastics, as well as reducing the energy consumption to contribute to a sustainable and green future.

The most recent initiative of this kind is the introduction of small-sized SIM cards that reduce by half the amount of plastic used, starting with May 17, 2021. They are replacing the standard credit card-sized SIM holders and will become available initially for customers acquiring mobile and fixed subscription services only, while by the end of 2021 they will become available for all services in the company’s portfolio.

Furthermore, from 2019 until today, Vodafone Romania managed a series of activities to reduce its environmental footprint, among which:

• Creating te first smart forest in Romania, Vodafone Smart Forest, which prevents illegal logging;
• Using 100% green energy for all activities, including for the operation of the Green Supernet network, powered exclusively by renewable energy;
• Implementing advanced cooling technologies in the main data centers that significantly reduce the amount of energy consumed;
• Introducing eSIMs and half-sized SIMs, respectively, thus reducing the plastic consumption;
• Installing photovoltaic panels on some of the Vodafone locations for green energy production;
• Reusing, selling or recycling 100% of the redundant network equipment;
• Developing WEEE collection and recycling programmes and refurbished phones sale programmes.

By 2040, Vodafone will have eliminated its emissions from indirect sources completely, bringing forward by ten years Vodafone’s original 2050 ambition to reach ‘net zero’ across its full carbon footprint.

In order to reach “net zero”, the company has set a series of medium and long term objectives as part of the Planet pillar supporting the Vodafone purpose. These targets provide for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from own activities and energy purchased and consumed by 50% by 2025 and in full by 2030. Vodafone also pledged that by 2030 it will halve the carbon emissions from indirect sources – including joint ventures, all supply chain purchases, the use of products it has sold and business travel.
